Time and work in seconds: the LCM (total work) method

Take the LCM of the days as the total work. Each person's work per day then becomes a whole number, so you only add, subtract and divide — no fractions.

The method

The usual way adds fractions like 1/12 + 1/18. The LCM method turns those fractions into whole units of work.

  1. Take the LCM of all the given days (or hours). Call it the total work.
  2. Divide the total work by each person's days to get work per day (efficiency). ·
  3. Add the per-day work of people working together. ·
  4. Time = total work ÷ combined work per day.
Example A can finish a job in 12 days and B in 18 days. How long will they take together?
LCM(12, 18) = 36 units. A = 36 ÷ 12 = 3 units/day, B = 36 ÷ 18 = 2 units/day. Together 5 units/day → 36 ÷ 5 = 7.2 days = 7⅕ days.
Example A, B and C can do a job in 10, 15 and 30 days. Together?
LCM = 30 units. A = 3, B = 2, C = 1 → 6 units/day → 30 ÷ 6 = 5 days.

Finding one person's time

When the time together is given, subtract per-day work instead of adding it.

Example A and B together finish a job in 12 days; A alone takes 20 days. How long does B take alone?
LCM(12, 20) = 60 units. A + B = 5 units/day, A = 3 → B = 2 units/day → 60 ÷ 2 = 30 days.
Example A (12 days) and B (18 days) start together; A leaves after 4 days. How many more days does B need?
Total 36 units; A = 3, B = 2. In the first 4 days both work: (3 + 2) × 4 = 20 units. Left 36 − 20 = 16 units; B alone needs 16 ÷ 2 = 8 more days.

Pipes and cisterns: same trick with a minus sign

A filling pipe adds units; an emptying pipe (leak) removes units. Give the emptying pipe a negative value.

Example Pipe A fills a tank in 20 hours; pipe B empties it in 30 hours. Both are open. Time to fill?
LCM = 60 units. A = +3, B = −2 → net +1 unit/hour → 60 hours.

Efficiency questions

If A is twice as efficient as B, give A 2 units/day and B 1 unit/day directly. Example: B alone takes 30 days, so the work is 30 × 1 = 30 units; together they do 3 units/day → 10 days.
