Mixtures in seconds: the alligation (cross) rule

When two things with different prices (or strengths, or profit rates) are mixed to get a mean value, the quantities are in the ratio (dearer − mean) : (mean − cheaper). Draw the cross, subtract, and read the ratio.

The rule

Write the cheaper value (c) on the left, the dearer value (d) on the right and the mean (m) in the middle. Subtract across the cross:

Cheaper quantity : Dearer quantity = (d − m) : (m − c)

  1. Put cheaper (c) and dearer (d) on top, mean (m) in the middle.
  2. Under the cheaper one write d − m; under the dearer one write m − c.
  3. Simplify the ratio. If a total quantity is given, split it in this ratio. ·
Example Rice at ₹30/kg is mixed with rice at ₹45/kg to get a mixture worth ₹40/kg. In what ratio? How much of each in 60 kg?
(45 − 40) : (40 − 30) = 5 : 10 = 1 : 2. In 60 kg: 20 kg of ₹30 rice and 40 kg of ₹45 rice. Check: (20 × 30 + 40 × 45) ÷ 60 = 2400 ÷ 60 = ₹40.
Example In what ratio must water be mixed with milk costing ₹60 per litre so that the mixture is worth ₹48 per litre?
Water costs ₹0. Water : milk = (60 − 48) : (48 − 0) = 12 : 48 = 1 : 4.

It works for percentages and profit too

The 'value' can be anything averaged by quantity: concentration (%), profit %, marks, speed per hour of work. The same cross gives the ratio.

Example A 20% acid solution is mixed with a 50% acid solution to get a 30% solution. In what ratio?
(50 − 30) : (30 − 20) = 20 : 10 = 2 : 1 (two parts of the 20% solution, one part of the 50%).
Example A trader sells 50 kg of sugar, part at 10% profit and the rest at 20% profit, and gains 14% overall. How much did he sell at 10%?
(20 − 14) : (14 − 10) = 6 : 4 = 3 : 2 → 50 × 3/5 = 30 kg at 10% (and 20 kg at 20%).

Repeated replacement (take out and refill)

If x litres are taken out of V litres of a liquid and replaced with water, n times, the liquid left = V × (1 − x/V)ⁿ.

Example A can holds 40 litres of milk. 4 litres are taken out and replaced with water; this is done twice. How much milk is left?
40 × (36/40)² = 40 × 0.81 = 32.4 litres.

  1. Tea at ₹120/kg and ₹180/kg is mixed to sell at ₹160/kg (no profit). Ratio?
    Show answer

    (180 − 160) : (160 − 120) = 20 : 40 = 1 : 2

  2. In what ratio must water be mixed with milk costing ₹50/litre to get a mixture worth ₹40/litre? · ₹50/
    Show answer

    Water : milk = (50 − 40) : (40 − 0) = 10 : 40 = 1 : 4

  3. From 50 litres of milk, 5 litres are replaced with water three times. Milk left? · 50
    Show answer

    50 × (45/50)³ = 50 × 0.729 = 36.45 litres
