The Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic, finding HCF and LCM by prime factorisation (with word problems), and proving that numbers like √2, √3, √5 and 5 − √3 are irrational.

The Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic

A prime number has exactly two factors, 1 and itself (2, 3, 5, 7, 11, …). A composite number has more than two factors (4, 6, 8, 9, …). The number 1 is neither prime nor composite.

Take any composite number and keep splitting it into factors until every piece is prime. However you start, you always end with the same primes, only perhaps in a different order. This fact has a name.

Every composite number = product of primes (unique, apart from the order)

Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic: every composite number can be written as a product of primes, and this factorisation is unique except for the order in which the primes appear.

Irrational numbers and how to prove themअपरिमेय संख्याएँ और उन्हें सिद्ध करना

A rational number can be written as p/q, where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0. A number that cannot be written this way is irrational: √2, √3, √5, π, and in general √n when n is a positive integer that is not a perfect square. Rational and irrational numbers together make up the real numbers.

To prove a number is irrational we use proof by contradiction: assume it IS rational, follow the logic, and reach something impossible. The key tool is the theorem below.

p prime and p divides a² ⟹ p divides a

Theorem (a a positive integer). Reason: by the Fundamental Theorem, the primes in a² are exactly the primes in a, each appearing twice as often. So if p is a prime factor of a², it must already be a prime factor of a.

Solved example

Prove that √2 is irrational.

  1. Suppose √2 is rational. Then √2 = a/b, where a and b are integers, b ≠ 0, and a, b are co-prime (no common factor other than 1 — we can always cancel common factors first).
  2. So √2 b = a. Squaring: 2b² = a². Hence 2 divides a², so (by the theorem) 2 divides a.तो √2 b = a।
  3. Write a = 2c for some integer c. Then 2b² = 4c², so b² = 2c². Hence 2 divides b², so 2 divides b.
  4. Now 2 divides both a and b. This contradicts our assumption that a and b are co-prime.
  5. The contradiction came from assuming √2 is rational, so that assumption is false.

Answerउत्तर: √2 is irrational. (The same steps with 3 or 5 in place of 2 prove √3 and √5 irrational.)√2 अपरिमेय है।

Remember

  • rational + irrational = irrational (e.g. 5 − √3, 2 + √5).
  • non-zero rational × irrational = irrational (e.g. 3√2, √5/4).
  • irrational + irrational, or irrational × irrational, can be rational: √2 + (−√2) = 0 and √2 × √2 = 2.

Solved example

Given that √3 is irrational, prove that 5 − √3 is irrational.

  1. Suppose 5 − √3 is rational: 5 − √3 = a/b, with a, b integers and b ≠ 0.मान लीजिए 5 − √3 परिमेय है: 5 − √3 = a/b, जहाँ a, b पूर्णांक हैं और b ≠ 0।
  2. Then √3 = 5 − a/b = (5b − a)/b.तब √3 = 5 − a/b = (5b − a)/b।
  3. Since a, b are integers, (5b − a)/b is rational, so √3 would be rational.
  4. This contradicts the fact that √3 is irrational.

Prove that √3 is irrational.

Show answer

Suppose √3 is rational: √3 = a/b, where a, b are co-prime integers and b ≠ 0. Then 3b² = a², so 3 divides a², hence 3 divides a (3 is prime). Let a = 3c. Then 3b² = 9c², so b² = 3c². So 3 divides b², hence 3 divides b. 3 divides both a and b, contradicting that a and b are co-prime. So our assumption is wrong and √3 is irrational.

Given that √2 is irrational, prove that 4 − 3√2 is irrational.

Show answer

Suppose 4 − 3√2 = a/b, with a, b integers, b ≠ 0. Then 3√2 = 4 − a/b = (4b − a)/b, so √2 = (4b − a)/(3b). (4b − a) and 3b are integers and 3b ≠ 0, so the right side is rational — that would make √2 rational. This contradicts the fact that √2 is irrational. Hence 4 − 3√2 is irrational.

मान लीजिए 4 − 3√2 = a/b, जहाँ a, b पूर्णांक हैं, b ≠ 0। तब 3√2 = 4 − a/b = (4b − a)/b, इसलिए √2 = (4b − a)/(3b)।

Three traffic signals on a road change to green every 48 seconds, 72 seconds and 108 seconds respectively. All three turned green together at 7:00 a.m. (i) Write the prime factorisation of 108. (ii) Find the HCF of 48 and 72. (iii) After how many seconds will all three turn green together again? (iv) At what time will that happen?

Show answer

(i) 108 = 2² × 3³ (ii) 48 = 2⁴ × 3, 72 = 2³ × 3² → HCF = 2³ × 3 = 24 (iii) "Together again" → LCM(48, 72, 108) = 2⁴ × 3³ = 432 seconds (iv) 432 s = 7 min 12 s, so at 7:07:12 a.m.

(i) 108 = 2² × 3³ (ii) 48 = 2⁴ × 3, 72 = 2³ × 3² → म.स.

(a) Prove that √5 is irrational. (b) Hence show that 2 + √5 is irrational. (c) Give an example to show that the sum of two irrational numbers need not be irrational.

Show answer

(a) Suppose √5 = a/b, with a, b co-prime integers, b ≠ 0. Then 5b² = a², so 5 divides a², hence 5 divides a (5 is prime). Let a = 5c: 5b² = 25c², so b² = 5c², so 5 divides b² and hence b. Then 5 is a common factor of a and b — a contradiction. So √5 is irrational. (b) Suppose 2 + √5 = p/q (p, q integers, q ≠ 0). Then √5 = p/q − 2 = (p − 2q)/q, which is rational — contradicting (a). So 2 + √5 is irrational. (c) (2 + √5) + (2 − √5) = 4. Both numbers are irrational but their sum, 4, is rational.

(a) मान लीजिए √5 = a/b, जहाँ a, b सह-अभाज्य पूर्णांक हैं, b ≠ 0।

Can two numbers have 18 as their HCF and 380 as their LCM? Give a reason.

Show answer

No. The HCF always divides the LCM exactly (both numbers are multiples of the HCF, so their LCM is too). 380 ÷ 18 = 21 remainder 2, so 18 does not divide 380.

The number minus 5 must be divisible by 12, 16 and 24, so it is a multiple of their LCM. 12 = 2² × 3, 16 = 2⁴, 24 = 2³ × 3 → LCM = 2⁴ × 3 = 48 Smallest number = 48 + 5 = 53. Check: 53 = 12 × 4 + 5 = 16 × 3 + 5 = 24 × 2 + 5 ✓
