Light – Reflection and Refraction

How mirrors and lenses form images: laws of reflection, concave and convex mirrors, refraction and refractive index, convex and concave lenses, the mirror and lens formulas with the sign convention, and the power of a lens.

Light travels in straight lines in a uniform medium. That is why an opaque object casts a sharp shadow. We draw the path of light as a straight line with an arrow and call it a ray.

Reflection of light

When light falls on a polished surface such as a mirror, it bounces back. This is reflection. The line drawn at 90° to the surface at the point where the ray hits it is called the normal. The angle between the incoming ray and the normal is the angle of incidence (i); the angle between the reflected ray and the normal is the angle of reflection (r).

i = 35°r = 35°N

i = 35°, so r = 35°. Whatever the angle, the reflected ray leaves at the same angle to the normal (N).i = 35°, इसलिए r = 35°। कोण कुछ भी हो, परावर्तित किरण अभिलंब (N) से उतने ही कोण पर लौटती है।

Press Play and watch the light flow in and bounce off the mirror. However the angle changes, the angle of incidence (i) and the angle of reflection (r) stay equal.

Remember

  • Law 1: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection (i = r).
  • Law 2: the incident ray, the normal and the reflected ray all lie in the same plane.
  • These laws hold for every reflecting surface, flat or curved.
  • A plane mirror forms an image that is virtual, erect, the same size as the object, as far behind the mirror as the object is in front, and laterally inverted (left and right swapped).

Spherical mirrors

A spherical mirror is a piece cut from a hollow shiny sphere. If the shiny side curves inwards (like the inside of a spoon), it is a concave mirror. If the shiny side bulges outwards (like the back of a spoon), it is a convex mirror.

Important terms: the centre of the mirror surface is the pole (P). The centre of the sphere it was cut from is the centre of curvature (C), and that sphere's radius is the radius of curvature (R). The straight line through P and C is the principal axis. Rays parallel to the principal axis meet (concave) or appear to spread from (convex) one point, the principal focus (F). The distance PF is the focal length (f). For mirrors with a small opening, R = 2f.

  • New Cartesian sign convention: put the pole (P) at the origin and the principal axis along the x-axis.
  • The object is always placed on the left, so light travels left to right.
  • Distances measured to the right of P (in the direction of light) are positive; to the left are negative. So the object distance u is always negative.P
  • Heights above the principal axis are positive; below are negative.
  • Result: a concave mirror has a negative focal length; a convex mirror has a positive focal length.

Refraction of light

Light changes speed when it passes from one transparent medium into another, and so it bends at the boundary (unless it hits the boundary straight on, along the normal). This bending is refraction. It is why Meena's pencil looked broken and why a pool looks shallower than it really is.

Going from a rarer (optically less dense) medium into a denser one, such as air into glass, light slows down and bends towards the normal. Going from denser to rarer, it speeds up and bends away from the normal. Through a rectangular glass slab the ray comes out parallel to the ray that went in, only shifted sideways.

Change the angle and the two materials. Air to glass bends the ray towards the normal; glass to air bends it away. Bonus (Class 12): from glass to air beyond about 42°, no light escapes at all — total internal reflection.

Remember

  • Law 1: the incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal lie in the same plane.
  • Law 2 (Snell's law): for a given pair of media and a given colour of light, sin i / sin r is constant.
  • That constant is the refractive index of the second medium with respect to the first: n₂₁ = sin i / sin r = v₁ / v₂.
  • Absolute refractive index: n = c / v, where c = 3 × 10⁸ m/s is the speed of light in vacuum and v its speed in the medium.
  • Optically denser does not mean heavier: kerosene (n = 1.44) is optically denser than water (n = 1.33) but has lower mass density.

Spherical lenses

A lens is a piece of transparent material with at least one curved surface. A convex lens is thicker in the middle; it brings parallel rays together, so it is a converging lens. A concave lens is thicker at the edges; it spreads parallel rays out, so it is a diverging lens.

The centre of the lens is its optical centre (O); a ray through O goes straight on without bending. A lens has two principal foci, F₁ on the left and F₂ on the right, each at the focal length f from O. Points at twice the focal length are marked 2F₁ and 2F₂.

Power of a lens

A lens with a shorter focal length bends light more strongly. Its power is P = 1/f, with f in metres. The unit is the dioptre (D): 1 D is the power of a lens with focal length 1 m. A convex lens has positive power and a concave lens negative power. When an eye doctor prescribes "+2.0", that is a convex lens of focal length 0.5 m.

For lenses placed in contact, the powers simply add: P = P₁ + P₂ + …

Why does a pencil partly dipped in water appear bent at the surface?

Show answer

Light from the part under water refracts as it passes from water (denser) into air (rarer) and bends away from the normal. When this light reaches our eyes, it seems to come from a point higher than where it actually comes from, so the dipped part looks raised and the pencil looks bent at the surface.

(iii) She moves the candle to 20 cm from the lens. Where must she move the screen? (iv) She now moves the candle to 10 cm from the lens. Can she get the image on the screen? Why?

Show answer

(i) Same-size image means the candle is at 2F₁: 2f = 30 cm, so f = 15 cm. (Check: 1/f = 1/30 + 1/30 = 1/15.) (ii) P = 1/0.15 m ≈ +6.67 D. (iii) u = −20 cm: 1/v = 1/15 − 1/20 = 1/60, so v = +60 cm. Move the screen to 60 cm behind the lens. (iv) No. At 10 cm the candle is inside the focus (between F₁ and O), so the image is virtual and erect, on the same side as the candle. A virtual image cannot be caught on a screen.

State the New Cartesian sign convention for spherical mirrors. Using it, show that a convex mirror always forms a virtual image behind the mirror.

Show answer

Sign convention: 1. The object is placed to the left of the mirror, so light falls from the left. 2. All distances are measured from the pole along the principal axis. 3. Distances in the direction of incident light (to the right) are positive; against it (to the left) negative. 4. Heights above the principal axis are positive; below are negative. Proof: for a convex mirror f is positive, and u is always negative. From the mirror formula, 1/v = 1/f − 1/u = 1/f + 1/|u|. Both terms are positive, so v is always positive: the image is always behind the mirror. Then m = −v/u = v/|u| is positive, so the image is erect, which means it is virtual. Also 1/v > 1/f, so v < f: the image lies between P and F.

A convex glass lens (n = 1.5) converges light in air. Will it still converge light if it is dipped in a liquid of refractive index 1.65? Explain.

Show answer

No, it will diverge light. A lens bends light because its refractive index differs from that of the surroundings. In air, glass is denser, so light bends towards the thick middle and converges. In a liquid of n = 1.65, the glass (n = 1.5) is optically rarer than its surroundings, so the bending is reversed and the convex lens behaves like a diverging lens.
